So, whether you’re coming in with friends, family, or coworkers, we understand the desire to improve in axe throwing skills simply to show the others up. If this is ringing true for you, you’re going to want to stick around for today’s blog post, because the team at Civil Axe Throwing is going to be going over b tips that can take your axe throwing to the next level!

Find Your Spot

Something that matters more than people may think is the spot that you pick to ground yourself and throw the axe. The reality, however, is that this spot will contribute to the likelihood of you hitting a bullseye! We suggest being somewhere between five paces and twelve feet away from the target. The spot that you select should provide you with enough room to take a step forward with your non-dominant foot so that you’re able to throw with your dominant hand.

Get a Good Grip

Now that you’ve found the perfect spot to ground yourself, it’s time to get a good grip on the axe that you’re about to throw. We suggest holding your axe at the base, similar to a baseball bat. Gripping like this can help you cover more ground when you do finally throw the axe, which is exactly what you want.

Hype Up

Energy makes a big difference in how well you throw — entirely! Before you release the axe, you want to get your energy going and the overall hype up. If you’re there with friends, have them cheering for you and getting excited about the throw that you’re about to make. If you have a little competition going, this shouldn’t be hard. Soak up in the energy and prepare to use it for your throw!

Prepare for the Throw

Once you’ve got a good grip on the axe, it’s time to prepare for the throw. Lift the axe straight back, behind your head. As you do this, make sure that your wrist and elbows are locked so that you are able to throw this axe with some power. As soon as you’ve got your stance and you’re feeling that power, it’s time to focus. Focus on the target ahead and where you’d like to hit it. Are you ready? Okay, deep breath.

The Throw

It’s time for the throw! You’re focused on the target, you take a deep breath in and you exhale. When you’re ready to throw, you want to throw the axe as if you’re throwing a soccer ball with two hands. One of the things that we see quite a bit of is an extra umph as the axe is about to be released, but this is the last thing that you want to do. Rather than let your wrists do some extra work at the release, simply let go of the axe when it’s perfectly vertical. Remember, keep your arms straight so that you can transfer all of this power into your throw.
